If you have been relying on the Climate Card (기후동행카드) to get around Seoul, it is time to mark your calendar. The existing Climate Card and K-Pass systems are officially merging into the all-new Climate Card Plus, meaning the standalone passes you are currently using are about to expire.

Here is everything you need to know about the transition and the hard deadlines ahead.

The Deadlines You Need to Know

The original Climate Card is being phased out in stages throughout August 2026:

  • Prepaid (30-Day) Cards: The final day to recharge these cards was July 31. Any remaining balances or active 30-day cycles will officially stop working after August 29.

  • Postpaid Cards: If your Climate Card is tied to a credit or check card, the transit discount benefits will officially expire on August 31. Starting September 1, it will revert to a standard, non-discounted transit card.

  • Note: Short-term tourist passes (1, 2, 3, 5, and 7-day) are unaffected and will remain active.

What is the New "Climate Card Plus"?

Instead of making you choose between the flat-rate savings of the Climate Card and the refund perks of the national K-Pass, the city has combined them into one smart system.

The Climate Card Plus automatically calculates whichever benefit saves you more money at the end of the month:

  • If you spend less than 62,000 KRW, it applies the K-Pass refund system (giving you 20% to 53.3% back depending on your demographic).

  • If you spend 62,000 KRW or more, it automatically switches to the unlimited flat-rate cap, keeping your commutes highly affordable.

Your Next Steps

To avoid paying full price for your commute come September, you need to switch over soon.

If you are an existing K-Pass user, your current card will automatically transition to the new benefits. However, if you are strictly an original Climate Card user, you will need to issue a new Climate Card Plus (via the T-money app or a participating bank) and register it online.

Don't wait until the August 31 rush—make the switch early to keep your daily transit savings rolling seamlessly into the fall!
