The winter in Seoul is indeed known for its coldness. Especially from December to February of the following year, due to the frequent southward movement of cold air from Siberia, the temperature often drops to around -10 degrees Celsius, and the perceived temperature is even lower. Morning streets are shrouded in frost and fog. The railings and street trees along the Han River are often covered with a thin layer of white frost. The water vapor exhaled from subway station exits instantly condenses into white fog. Down jackets, wool hats, scarves and gloves have almost become the standard attire for citizens when going out. According to data from the Korean Meteorological Agency's long-term observations, the annual average minimum temperature in Seoul's urban area can reach -6.5℃ in winter, while in suburbs such as Goyang and Jiuri, it sometimes even drops below -15℃. Moreover, Seoul is surrounded by mountains on three sides and faces the river on one side. Cold air tends to accumulate in the basin, and due to the low wind speed in the city, the cold wave lasts for a long time and cools down slowly, intensifying the feeling of coldness. Although indoor heating systems are generally equipped with underfloor heating, the temperature difference between indoors and outdoors often exceeds 25℃, posing certain challenges to the health of the elderly and children. Therefore, "Seoul is too cold" is not only a common expression in daily life but also reflects the local residents' real experience of the seasonal climate.
