I enjoy visiting Hanyang-dong not only because it combines the most representative artistic atmosphere and historical heritage of Seoul, but also because it is a unique area that integrates tradition and modernity, tranquility and vitality. Hanyang-dong is located along Hanam-daero in Yongsan District of Seoul, adjacent to Namsan Mountain and the Han River. It has a superior geographical location with wide views, and the scenery varies throughout the four seasons - in spring, cherry blossoms bloom along the street; in autumn, the silver maple avenue spreads golden hues; in winter, the coffee shops are filled with warmth by the windows; and in summer, there is a leisurely lifestyle shaded by greenery.
This area was once a gathering place for diplomats and cultural celebrities in the mid-20th century. It retains many old-style houses and low-density residences with diverse styles. Nowadays, many of them have been transformed into independent galleries, vintage boutiques, handmade ceramic studios, niche fragrance laboratories and quiet independent bookstores. Along the streets and alleys, one can unexpectedly encounter multi-functional cultural spaces renovated from old warehouses, or private cafes hidden at the end of the ramps that require ringing the doorbell to enter. The owners are mostly local creators or international individuals who have lived in South Korea for a long time. They pay attention to materials, craftsmanship and spatial narrative, making each visit feel like opening a miniature cultural experience.
In addition, the area around Hanyang-dong has convenient transportation, allowing easy access to Pyeongtaek and Seongsu-dong. This forms a layered urban cultural route. Moreover, it deliberately maintains a "quiet" tone - there are no large chain stores clustering here, and few tourist groups gather. Instead, it is more frequented by local young people, designers, and freelancers who come here to stroll, socialize, and seek inspiration. Whether it's stopping to admire a hand-painted wall, spending half an hour choosing a vintage brooch, or sitting on a bench by the river to finish reading a poetry collection, Hanyang-dong always enables people to slow down and touch the delicate and genuine texture of life within the urban fabric.
