They're everywhere — flying in pairs, sticking to windows, walls, your clothes… even inside the subway! These little black-and-red insects, technically called Plecia nearctica, are harmless to humans but definitely not to your nerves 😅
Locals are calling it a “lovebug outbreak,” and it's not just your imagination. Due to the unusually warm and humid weather this summer, their numbers have exploded. Lovebugs usually appear in spring and fall, but this year, they're crashing summer like an uninvited couple at a wedding.
Ironically, lovebugs spend most of their lives as larvae underground, only to surface for a few days of frenzied mating — literally flying around attached to each other. Romantic? Maybe. Annoying? Absolutely. They don’t bite or sting, but they swarm in such large numbers that it's hard not to freak out.
You’ll see them clinging to storefronts, gathering near streetlights, and hitching rides on buses and people. Some areas even have public notices warning residents not to panic — the lovebugs are just doing their thing and will disappear soon (hopefully!).
So, if you've been swatting away these clingy little lovebirds lately, you’re not alone. Pro tip: don’t squish them — they leave a mess. Use a tissue or gently brush them off instead.
Nature is wild, and Korea’s summer just got a lot more romantic… whether we like it or not. 😂🌿
Stay strong out there, friends. Love (bugs) is in the air.
