Many universities in South Korea plan to raise tuition fees for the 2025 academic year, ending a 17-year freeze. Despite the Ministry of Education urging universities to maintain the freeze, financial pressures have led many institutions to raise costs. Over half of private universities have announced plans for a tuition increase, with notable institutions like Sogang University and Kookmin University already taking action. For the past decade, the government has strictly regulated tuition fees by limiting financial support to universities that raise them. However, with growing economic challenges, university leaders now widely agree that tuition hikes are necessary to maintain educational quality.
