When people think of Korean food, they often imagine Korean BBQ, fried chicken, or tteokbokki. But for many Koreans, the food they eat most often is actually jjigae (찌개).

Living in Korea, I've noticed that jjigae is one of those meals people never seem to get tired of. On busy weekdays, office workers gather at nearby restaurants for a quick bowl of kimchi jjigae. Students often choose sundubu jjigae because it's affordable and filling. Even families who cook at home frequently make some kind of jjigae because it's simple, comforting, and goes perfectly with rice.

One thing I find interesting is how everyone seems to have their own favorite type. Some people love the spicy and slightly sour taste of kimchi jjigae, while others prefer the deeper, earthy flavor of doenjang jjigae. If you ask a group of friends which one is the best, you'll probably start a friendly debate right away.

Another thing that surprised me was how often Koreans eat hot food, even during summer. On a hot day, you might expect people to choose something cold, but restaurants serving bubbling pots of jjigae are still packed during lunchtime. Many people say that a spicy stew helps them regain their appetite and energy, especially during Korea's humid summer months.

Jjigae is also one of those dishes that feels comforting no matter what kind of day you've had. After a long day at work, sitting down with a bowl of rice and a hot stew somehow makes everything feel a little better. It's not fancy food, but that's exactly why people love it.

After living in Korea for a while, I've come to realize that jjigae isn't just a dish—it's part of everyday life. It's the kind of meal people eat without thinking twice, whether they're dining alone, having lunch with coworkers, or sharing dinner with family.

Sometimes, the foods that best represent a country aren't the famous ones tourists line up for. They're the dishes locals eat over and over again. In Korea, jjigae is definitely one of them.
