Korean winters are famous for being dry, windy, and surprisingly cold. But locals have their own smart ways of staying warm — and travelers can easily learn from them.
First, layering is everything. Koreans wear thin heat-tech inner shirts, sweaters, and long padded coats called long padding. These coats are everywhere in winter and are designed to trap heat while blocking cold wind.
Second, hot drinks and snacks are part of daily survival. From convenience store hot canned coffee to street-side fish cake soup, warm food is always within reach. Many people also carry heat packs in their pockets or gloves.
Indoors, ondol heating (traditional floor heating) keeps homes and restaurants warm from the ground up. After walking in the cold all day, stepping onto a heated floor feels incredibly comforting.
Despite the cold, Koreans continue their daily routines — commuting, shopping, meeting friends — with energy. Winter may be harsh, but the lifestyle around it is warm, efficient, and surprisingly cozy.
If you know how locals stay warm, you’ll find Korean winter much easier to enjoy.
