Starting this summer, Korea has rolled out a new initiative called the Climate Companion Card (기후동행카드), aiming to promote public transportation and reduce carbon emissions. For just ₩65,000 per month, this card gives you unlimited rides on subways, buses, and even some intercity trains in certain regions — including Seoul, Gyeonggi-do, and Incheon. 🚇🚌
Why is this a big deal?
Because it’s not just a transportation pass — it’s a small but significant step toward fighting climate change. By encouraging people to use public transport instead of driving, the government hopes to reduce traffic, pollution, and greenhouse gases. Plus, let’s be honest — with rising living costs, a card like this is a lifesaver for commuters and students alike.
Who can use it?
Anyone! Koreans and foreigners alike can sign up. You can apply through the official app or website, and the physical card is delivered by mail. There's also a mobile-only version if you prefer using your phone.
Things to note:
-
It's valid for 30 days from activation, not calendar months.
-
It’s non-transferable (one person per card).
-
It doesn't include high-speed trains like KTX, but some Mugunghwa and Nuriro trains are included.
As someone who commutes daily, I can say this card already paid for itself within two weeks. And there's something satisfying about tapping your card without worrying about the fare every time. 🙌
This is one of the few cases where helping the planet actually helps your wallet too. 🌍💸
Have you tried it yet? Let me know how it’s working for you!
