Last week was Buddha’s Birthday, it was holiday in Korea. There were some traditional celebration with Buddha’s Birthday. 

 

  • Lantern Festival
    On Buddha’s Birthday, temples and streets across Korea are beautifully decorated with countless colorful lanterns, symbolizing the light of wisdom that dispels the darkness of ignorance and honoring the compassionate teachings of the Buddha.

  • Buddhist Ceremony (Beompae)
    In temples, monks and laypeople gather to hold sacred ceremonies where they chant sutras, offer incense and flowers, and express gratitude for the birth of Buddha, reaffirming their commitment to follow the path of enlightenment and compassion.

  • Bathing the Buddha (Gwanbul Ritual)
    A traditional ritual called “Bathing the Buddha” is performed, in which participants pour fragrant water or tea over a small statue of the infant Buddha, symbolizing the purification of one’s heart and the aspiration to lead a life guided by kindness, humility, and inner peace.

  • Cultural Events and Parades
    In many cities, joyful parades and cultural festivals are held, featuring traditional music, performances, and Buddhist art, inviting people of all backgrounds to come together and celebrate universal values such as peace, harmony, and respect for all life.
